This event will highlight the Filipino American experience.  Programming will include:

 – a reading of the book, “Cadet, Soldier, Guerilla Fighter: Remembering Bataan and Corregidor” authored by Antonio Nieva and a book signing by editor Pepi Nieva;
– a re-enactment of the historic case United States Supreme Court Case Wards Cove v. Atonio, a case involving employer’s discriminatory treatment of Filipino American salmon cannery workers; and

 – a presentation titled, “Welcome to America: Legal and Financial Matters

A conversation about undocumented America

Jose Antonio Vargas is the 2017-2018 Morse Chair and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. In 2011, he published a story in the New York Times Magazine titled “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.” Since then, he has devoted himself to changing the cultural and policy conversations about immigration through filmmaking and activism.  His organization, Define American is a non-profit media and culture organization that uses the power of story to transcend politics and shift the conversation about immigrants, identity, and citizenship in a changing America. This conversation with Vargas will be moderated by Chris Chávez (School of Journalism and Communication).

The 30 minutes film Delano Manongs tells the story of farm labor organizer Larry Itliong and a group of Filipino farm workers who instigated one of the American farm labor movement’s finest hours – The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brought about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). While the movement is known for Cesar Chavez’s leadership and considered a Chicano movement, Filipinos played a pivotal role. Filipino labor organizer, Larry Itliong, a union veteran, organized a group of 1500 Filipinos to strike against the grape growers of Delano, California, beginning a collaboration between Filipinos, Chicanos and other ethnic workers that would go on for years.
